House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Has Lost Her Mind

Saturday, March 21, 2009

Nancy Pelosi doesn't think enforcing some of our immigration laws is a good idea. I guess we don't need the Justice Department. We can just ask Pelosi what laws she thinks we ought to enforce.

Last weekend, the House speaker was condemning raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at an immigration event in San Francisco.

Madame Speaker had this to say: "Who in our country would not want to change a policy of kicking in doors in the middle of the night and sending a parent away from their family? It must be stopped. What values system is that? I think it's un-American. I think it's un-American."

In case what she said was not crystal clear, Nancy Pelosi was telling a largely Hispanic audience in California that enforcing America's immigration laws is un-American. This is called pandering.

On Friday, Pelosi said she's standing by those idiotic statements, adding that we have to enforce our laws, control our borders, protect our workers, and create a path to legalization for those who aren't full documented, but repeated that does not mean kicking in doors in the middle of the night. Pelosi said what we really need is comprehensive immigration reform.

So here's the question. Nancy Pelosi says enforcing our immigration laws is "un-American." Is she right?

Mr. Jones:

Basically, Speaker Pelosi is saying that the government should not come into homes during the middle of the night, frighten children, and tear them away from their parents. In many instances, there are SWAT-team type tactics used. I agree with her that we shouldn't be pointing guns and/or barging in doors at 3am in the morning. Its not a matter of legal or illegal status, but of basic American values. We are not Russia or China and such actions are unnecessary and rather barbaric.

Why doesn't ICE just make it a firm policy to go to job sites to pick up illegal immigrants? They did this last year in Wheaton and Silver Spring, and they were able to round up more people at once. Legal relatives and friends were then able to get children from the schools without causing a scene. I don't know if this policy is employed mainly in Montgomery County, but its a reasonable step.

In my opinion, this is much different from pursuing basic immigration reform. I support regulated borders because we should be a nation of orderly immigration. For Pelosi, comprehensive immigration reform would include allowing people to "come out the shadows", pay fines, seek legal status in America, and also to allow temporary workers to obtain visas in order to cross the border for work. To many conservatives, immigration reform comprises of gathering every illegal alien and sending them back where they came from, which is something that is not only unfeasible, but makes little sense. Our borders are already broken, so how long is it going to take for most of these people to come back? Also, what about the children you leave in the aftermath that were born in America? Will they go into the foster care system, which is already overburdened? Even former President G.W. Bush knew reform was needed, but most of his own party bailed on him because they were more interested in playing politics than legislating. John McCain's biggest obstacle to rallying support among conservatives last year was his co-sponsorship of a comprehensive immigration bill in 2007 (with Ted Kennedy, the conservative movement's favorite bogeyman). The bill stalled in Congress and it became so radioactive that it died. This left us with NO plan at all, so basically illegal immigration just continued unfettered.

This is a difficult and emotional topic, but it can be solved if Congress actually tries to work towards an attainable plan. Pelosi really hasn't articulated what kind of plan she thinks will pass. Any reasonable plan must include penalties for coming here illegally, and if someone has committed a crime, they have to be sent back to their country. The border fence that is being built will deter illegal crossings, but it isn't going to solve the problem immediately.

Its also interesting that while the government has dragged its feet so much on this issue, the economy has soured and many immigrants are actually going back to Mexico and Central America because of dwindling opportunities here. We'll have to see what happens in the future.

Good post, as usual.

See I was gonna try and put in my two cents without commenting on the picture. Cuz if you look at the title and picture alone I just thought her botox went wrong. Mercy Lawd shame on it all!

It's definitely not un-american. Although we may not use the best tactics, if she isn't offering an alternative she should probably keep her mouth closed. Is it un-american when we use the same tactics to take known drug dealers from their homes while children are present? She gets no cool points from me.

Ka-os... her face is like that, because Mr. Jones loves to find the most horrible picture of someone he can find and post it up..i.e. the Erykah Badu pic, from a few post ago, now we all know he could have found a better pic of Miss Badu, just like poor Nancy here...lmao

Oh don't get me wrong, unless the pic has a sexy nigga he like...perhaps a chocolate NFL player or a light skin harlem play-a!

I knew I was going to get a response from you before I even wrote this. lol. I really do try to think these things through, and you know immigration isn't an easy issue to deal with, otherwise, we would have solved it years ago! I just want what is practical; notice I am not supporting blanket amnesty, but I just think ripping 4 year olds from their beds with government officials screaming at the top of their lungs might not be the best way to deal with the issue.

Regardless of the issue, your conservatism is always appreciated with me :)

@Jon - LoL you better have known I was gonna pull your coat tails baby boy lol. In short, I think the issue isn't as 'complicated' as many want to make it out to be. It may not be as politically advantageous for some politicians to tackle but trust, the issue is quite simple. Unless of course the law only applies to a select few...

Your brand of liberalism is also a breath of cabon offsetting fresh air as well (our next topic lol).

I'm certainly not a conventional thinker when it comes to politics. I had no idea you considered me to be a liberal. Who woulda thought? lol. Getting to the issue at hand regarding illegal immigration, what exactly do you suggest to fix the problem? Rounding people up, pointing guns at them, and flying them to Mexico City and San Salvador just isn't practical. In theory it sounds like the best action. Get rid of all the illegal lawbreakers, right? However the government is so broken that they have no clue as to how to get most of these people and they'd have no clue what to do with their children who are mostly American citizens. If you oppose temporary work visas, I have no issue with that, but what exactly do you propose?

Also, why are conservatives depending on the government to fix the problem when they basically don't even want government to exist in the first place? Do you support the vigilante system of border control, ala The Minutemen?

Inquisitive minds want to know...:)

@Jon - My (non-abbreviated) response to your questions can be found in your personal email. However, I just had to say this...

As for conservatives, it is a common misconception that we don't want the government to exist. Nothing can be further from the truth. We CONSERVATIVES just do not want the government in every facet of our daily lives. We want the government to uphold the Constitution and not try to use it to impede on our daily lives or to attack private citizens w/out just cause. Conservatives believe that America is a nation of LAWS and those laws should apply to equally.
