Lightening strikes twice in 2009: Michael Steele becomes first African-American ever to head the Republican National Committee.

Friday, January 30, 2009

Let's be clear here: This is a significant historical moment. I kinda wanna be cynical about former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele just being appointed RNC Chairman. In reality, he's the first black man to ever hold this post. This is just as historic and groundbreaking as Barack Obama winning the Presidency. Now, we'll wait and see if the good ole' boy Steele's selection indicates true change in the way the GOP conducts its business or if he's simply a lawn jockey. I'm actually really interested in seeing how the media will present this.

Is this as significant to you as Barack Obama being elected President? Why or Why not?

It is, indeed, historic.
I've always liked Michael Steele. He never stoops to the ad hominem slurs of the Limbaugh variety, and always addresses the issues themselves.

Also, it should not be forgotten that the Republican Party is, after all, the Party of Abraham Lincoln.

It will be interesting to see if Mr. Steele's leadership steers the GOP into the much needed bi- partisanship that President Obama is trying to cultivate, and that is so desperately needed.

Dickspot - He sounds gung-ho about it. He said he's ready to take back the Northeast and the West. Neither of those tasks will be easy. Both are damn near impossible without bi-partisanship.

Whenever ground is broken and an AA becomes a first then we should take notice. But it really depends on what he does in his role. We could have an AA lead the KKK for the first time ever but that doesn't exactly make it a great thing.

BPS - Good point, well taken.

It really is a ground-breaking moment. Politics aside, I am really proud the RNC had the guts to move in that direction.

The Republicans are so obvious. They just cannot get it right. Sarah Palin was no Hillary Clinton and Michael Steele is no Barack Obama.

^^You aremt seriously comparing Palin to Steele, are you? While they both are gimmicks the GOP thinks will make them appear cool and hip, Steele actually has some substance. He's chaired Republican committees at the local, state and now national level. That's on top of his executive experience as a LT. Gov. Palain, on the other hand, was totally unprepared for the national spotlight. Moreover, he (supposedly) was brought in for an actual leadership role. Palin was never anything more than a muzzled lapdog.

I'm not a Steele fan, per se, but hailing from my state and all, I've had an opportunity to follow him. I'm not fan, but he's no Palin.
