I vomit in my mouth a bit everytime I have to fill up. It seems like gas is getting more and more expensive by the minute. And it's not like this shit goes up by a penny or two. Fuel gets raised by the tens of cents at a time now.
There's no reason the average cost of regular unleaded at the three gas stations closest to my house is $4.06/gallon!!! It's insane.
I remember when I was 17 and got my first car, a gallon of regular gas at two gas stations closest to my high school (the Amoco/BP at 33rd Street and Greenmount and the Crown on 25th Street) cost $0.99.
That was in 2001.
I've even done stuff to respond to these astronomical prices. For example, I've stopped speeding and started using cruise control when I drive. I hear you can save 10% on gas if you slow down by 5 mph. I've started consolidating uptown and downtown trips. I've stopped just driving just for the hell of it. No more random trips between Baltimore and anywhere in the Washington, DC area just to "chill". I don't drive with random shit in the trunk anymore. That crate with car wash materials can definitely come out. I've started charging my work-related mileage back to my company. I didn't even really bother doing expense reports before.
My question to you all is this:
How much did a gallon of gasoline cost when you were 16-17 years old? How disgusted are you that we're paying $4.00 a gallon in 2008? And what, if anything, have you done to cope with the rising price of fuel.

LOL! Wait until its $6 a gallon!
;-)
It's been so long since I could afford to fill up. Gas is just to high. I'm riding the train more often as a result.
When I got my first car gas was $1.00 a gallon.
Wow when I got my first ride. It was in '97 and it was about .79-.89a gallon. in 08 I have three vehicles and it's about 10-1200 a month to maintain. They should impeach and deport Bush's ass. Make him live in Iran.
Stop crying
When I was 16, gas averaged about $.69 to $.79 a gallon in Mobile. I had a 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and then a 1979 Oldsmobile Regency 98. I could fill up either one for less than $15. Now it's costing me about $80 to fill up at $4.19 a gallon.
So HELL YEAH i'm disgusted for paying 4+ dollars per gallon.
I don't remember how much gas was when I started driving because in all acutality it wasn't too long ago, but what I do remember is, when I got my 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt in November 2007, it cost $27 to fill up. Now it cost $48...I reall am getting angry...
Yea, this gas is a fool. So, I just DON'T drive. Not that i don't want to - but the gas is out of control. I push along my unlimited CTA and Metra passes and just scurry on my way to where I have to go.
I'm thinking we graduated in the same year, maybe a year apart. I graduated in 2002. I'm pretty certain you did too.
I was looking through my memeory book from senior year, and I wrote down that the cost of gas was about 1.50. i cant believe it now. I thought maybe I completed that section a few years after I graduated and was fooling myself. But I guess I was right. And that was six years ago. it's amazing that gas went from 1.50/gal to over 4.00/gal in six years.
remember when it went over two bucks a gallon and everyone was freaking out? Hell, those seem like good times now
LOL!! Not even going to go there with the gas prices. We had a Democrat in office and the gas prices were too heavenly. I'm paying for that bliss now.
But gas now is so ridiculous ($3.99 a gallon) that I see a bicycle in my future. Charlotte is not an easy place to drive in. You do a lot of driving. I can see that when I move I will be finding a place across the street from my job and a bus or train stop around the corner.
Keep up with gas prices in your area, city, and state. Also find the cheapest on this website:

When I got my license gas was $.99 a gallon. I really don't have to fill my car due to where I live. A half a tank of gas will last me 3 weeks for the most part because I've been taking public transportation to NYC upon moving here. It just makes it easier in terms of parking and traffic.
Having said all that, I noticed someone referenced the good ol days when a Democrat was in office and gas was cheap. That's sad. The problem is not that a republican is in office. The problem is that for the past 20 some odd years this country has refused to build new refineries or drill for our own oil. We rely on these foreign countries to provide a resource that we so need. It's a damn shame and boarderline embarrassing that the President of the United States of America went to Saudi Arabia two weeks ago to ask them to increase their output when our own government REFUSES to increase it's own! If you are fed up with high gas prices, complain to your congressman or representative that has systematically placed the American people in this predicament with their energy policies! And to think when Congress brought the oil exec's to the hill and one of the congressional panel members said that they would 'sue' OPEC. Really...? In what fuckin court? One of the congressional members said that if gas continued to increace she would support 'socializing the oil companies'... Really...? A free enterprise controlled by the government...? Venezuela anyone...? As the old addage goes "God bless the child thats got his own." Americans want cheaper gas, then we have to produce it. If we won't produce it, suffer the consequences and pay whatever market cost is. It's your choice folks!
~Damnit!
Gas was 89 cents a gallon when I bought my first car. It cost about 9 dollars to fill it up. Many cars later, I filled up on Friday for 55 dollars.
In 1979 when gasoline prices skyrocketed and there were shortages, President Carter gave a speech in which he mentioned U.S. dependence on foreign oil. He offered some solutions. Little has been done since then and now we're again faced with skyrocketing gas prices. The speech is a long read but at least read from "In little more than two decades" to the end of the speech.

i can't wait to get to Chicago and ride that damn train, it cost me $53 to fill up today! a damn Jetta?!! i remember when gas was under a buck on the base i was on in Cali when i got my first car in '92. i'd slash Dubya's throat for that price right now. where are our alternatives? why are they not being developed? who killed the electric car? grrr

It's no fun if you don't say anything.
