What are your thoughts on the environment?

Tuesday, April 29, 2008

I make a conscious effort to do my part in protecting the environment. I recycle at home and at the office, I walk or bike instead of driving to destinations when it's feasible, I refuse to litter and I don't tolerate litterbugs in my circle, I try not to idle car engines, etc. I do my part.

I'm no fool though. I realise (note the random British spelling) that not everyone feels compelled to do many of the things I do to protect the environment, if any. Some people could really give two donkey shits about mother nature.

I was talking to a blogger at the BFR about this very topic and we clearly were on opposite sides of the spectrum. He said something to the effect of:
"I know I'm not having kids, which means I'm not having grandkids which means I don't need to give a shit about the environment. I'm gonna drive around in an Escalade...wearing a fur. Fuck a carbon footprint."
Although I'm sure he's more than willing to out himself, I refuse put him on blast, so don't even ask.

My question is this: How do you feel about the environment? Global warming? Climate change? Do you care about reducing your carbon footprint? How much do you care about doing your part to reduce human impact on the Earth?
.

How do I feel? Well, I try to do my part. I don't think I do enough - I don't think any of us do enough - but I try to eliminate paper. I think it was you in a previous post that inspired me not to get a plastic bag, or any bag, at the place where I pick up my lunch. I mean, I'm carrying it what - 15 steps at the most. Why do I need a bag.

Anyway, yea, I'm not all super hyper about it, but I'm trying to use less water, less electricity, etc.

My coworker prints all her emails, just to read and discard them.

I use less electricity and don't litter at all either.

Turn off the power strips, people. Even though the TV's off, it's still using electricity through the remote sensor.

Well, I have a daughter, so I care about how the world is gonna be left for her. Our predecessors already left a fucked up world for us. Chances are we'll do the same for our offspring and feuture inhabitants of the earth. But I make a conscious effort not to purposely make it any worse for them.

Look how the neglect of the environment is affecting us. Global warming, food crises, water bodies shrinking (leading to wars and possible wars)...the list could go on and on. I can only imagine how it will affect Earth's inhabitants in a hundred years or so.

Even though I have no desire to have children, I do love many around me that desire to have them so I am just as responsible for the world those future children will live in as their one day parents.

I haven't done anything drastic like living in a solar powered house or wearing clothes made outta soy. But I do little things that make a big difference. I unplug things (like phone chargers) that aren't readily being used. I turn off the water while I'm brushing my teeth. I recycle the paper in my dept at work. Turn off lights. Keep my car tuned. I remember reading somewhere that even those little things that don't even require any kinda major lifestyle change can make a big difference

Look around people, the environment is changing now. We don't to wait for our grandchildren to see changes globally. They are here now and are getting worse daily.

Although I will admit, I do waste a hell of a lot of water. Shaving, showering, brushing my teeth I let the water run needlessly. Just a habit I can't seem to break.

I try to do my part as well. But, I'm with curious the one area I fall down in is water. I dont leave the water running at the sink but I have been known to take a half hour shower.

What is carbon footprint?

I guess t hat shows how much I know about this stuff. Even with the new Green trend lately,I'm sureI don't do enough. I use to recycle, not so much anymore. I try to opt for paper bags verses the plastic bags at the grocery store, isn't that better? Or is that worse becasue of the whole tree thing?

Does wearing a fur coat really harm the environment? I mean I get the whole Suv thing, but what does a fur coat have to do with the environment, because I was really thinking about getting one this summer, for next winter.
I drive an Suv, so I'm know that I'm probably wrong in that aspect. It's not an Escalade or a Hummer, so I should get a point for that. It's a Toyota, which is made by the Japanese, so I know that is a step forward, right?

I was doing green long before it was the thing to do. Being a biology major in high school and college does that to you.

I reduce, reuse, and recyle as much as possible even if I have to take things home from work. But I do it because it makes me feel good. I love being outdoors and the last thing I want to do is see garbage.

I have to laugh when people say that they don't care about the children and grandchildren inheriting the earth from us. Did you know that our generation has the potential to live to be near 120 years old thanks to modern science. Do you want to live 90 more years of your life in filth? Not to mention, even if you don't have kids you do have kids being born into the family (nieces, nephews, cousins, etc.) so think of them.

Ummm shawn, your grandmother goes around collecting garbage weekly! How in hell did you fall off?

I'm no saint. I am pro environment but i don't back up what I say. I am for the water cars, I am for the hyprid cars and absolutely anti-suv!

I have been good with littering for the most part, i need to be stronger. I recycle when appropiate bins are available. I care but I can care a great deal more
